Cockroach Janta Party alleges government schools in Hyderabad, Telangana blocked volunteers during ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign

Volunteers of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), who were conducting safety and infrastructure checks at government schools as part of the nationwide ‘School Thik Karo’ (Fix the Schools) campaign, have alleged that they were prevented from entering several schools in Hyderabad and parts of Telangana.

The organisation alleged that a coordinated administrative effort was being used to prevent citizens from examining the condition of public schools and raising concerns over safety and infrastructure. CJP said volunteers were barred from conducting social audits at government schools in Armoor, Trimulgherry, Moula Ali, Malkajgiri, Secunderabad and Siddipet.

The schools named by CJP are the ZPHS Girls High School in Armoor, GGHS Picket Government School in Trimulgherry, Government High School in Moula Ali, Government Boys High School and Government Girls High School in Malkajgiri, Seth Banwarilal Government School in Secunderabad and ZPHS Ramancha in Siddipet.

When asked about the number of schools covered so far, a CJP volunteer said 11 government schools had been visited in four days. The representative added that the group had not yet arrived at a final number of schools it intended to cover, as it was still trying to determine the total number of government schools and identify those that needed to be visited.

According to CJP, school administrations at several locations directly cited ‘orders from above’ while refusing volunteers entry. The organisation said the Government Girls High School in Malkajgiri was subjected to a complete administrative lockout, with entry being strictly denied.

CJP further alleged that when volunteers questioned the restrictions, local school officials said independent social audits could not be conducted without specific permission from higher authorities, including the Block Development Officer (BDO) or District Officer (DO). “The restrictions were concerning because our volunteers had identified safety and environmental concerns at locations where they were able to conduct checks despite the initial hurdles,” CJP said.

At one government school, people regularly gathered near the main entrance during evening hours and consumed illegal substances. Such activities create a potentially unsafe environment for students and school staff, they said.

The organisation also alleged that education and police authorities did not cooperate with the requests, citing limited powers to intervene without permission from higher authorities. “The sudden, aggressive directives from higher-ups to halt these social audits are deeply alarming,” a CJP campaign representative said.

The organisation has called on senior officials of the education departments and law enforcement authorities in Telangana to remove the arbitrary bureaucratic barriers, allow citizens to scrutinise the condition of government schools and address security concerns raised during the campaign.
