Sanjay made his directorial debut in 1994 with Aatish: Feel the Fire, starring Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor in pivotal roles. After making more action-thrillers in the consecutive years, Sanjay directed the multi-starrer heist-thriller, Kaante, which was heavily inspired from Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. Kaante featured Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Lucky Ali, Mahesh Manjrekar, Kumar Gaurav and Namrata Singh Gujral in pivotal roles.
The filmmaker further remade American films, U Turn and Suicide Kings into Musafir (2004) and Plan (2004). In 2006, he directed Zinda, which was based on the South Korean thriller, Oldboy.
His 2013 crime-drama, Shootout at Wadala, is among his better known works. It told the story of gangster Manya Surve, who was killed during an encounter with the Mumbai police.
Sanjay’s recent work includes the sports-drama film, Miranda Brothers, which was released on JioHotstar in 2024.
